Fruity news...

So not too much really happens at my job that's worth sharing on this blog. But just yesterday there was once such occurrence. Here it goes...

The cubicle that I'm sitting in was formerly occupied (and in many ways still is) by a girl on maternity leave. She's got quite a green thumb and an eye for decorating. There are 4 or 5 plants in the cube, and one of them is a big ivy-type one with leaves and vines pinned all around the walls. With all the green, you feel like you're in a tropical cubicle. Then there are the cleverly placed "cute" things. On the file cabinet are four or five M&M figurines that double as dispensers (you know... the M&M guys from all the commercials, one's a regular guy and one's a peanut). And the best of all... in a closed bookshelf (cubicle wall-mounted kind with a cover that lifts open) there was a lovely collection of small stuffed bunnies dressed in pastel clothes. Oh, and of course a picture of her newborn prominently displayed outside by her nameplate.

So... now you know what I live in.

My admin is one of the stereotypically extroverted, very friendly types that will talk to you no matter how your day is going. She always has something to laugh about are sort of say as an aside as she's passing by your desk on her errands around the office. So I'd gotten used to her playfully teasing me or saying random things. But this tops them all.

She walks by, and then suddenly stops to say, "Boy, if people didn't know you, they'd just assume you were a fruit!"

Me and the guy sitting across from me just laughed... I guess it's all about the desk. So... when I get my own cubicle, 2 rules: No plants. And no stuffed animals. But if I ever have a kid, I'll put his/her picture on the wall, for sure.

(this post is so entertaining, it meets my quota for at least two weeks)

musings about the new building...

that almost rhymes. haha.
anyway, here are some weird facts about my new building:
-the building is red brick walled. reminds me of an old-school school.
-the cubicles were really dirty when we moved in. i used way too many of those disinfectant wipes to clean my cubicle haha.
-the bathroom stalls are green!
-the toilets are not automatic flushers. :(
-the restrooms seemed to have been made for short people because the mirror isnt very long, stall door handles are much lower, stall walls arent very tall (i can probably see over them if i wanted to....), &everyone that i saw in the bathroom seemed to be short. haha.
-we are on the fifth floor. one day, i will walk up all five flights of stairs. until that day, i shall take the nice, glass elevator.
-there is a nice lounge room complete with couches by the break room. if it weren't right by where people get on &off the elevator, i'd take a nap there.
-the a/c vents are quite spiffy. they remind me of railroad tracks, but on the ceiling. but it is cold sitting under them :(

anyway, i am almost done with the 1st part of my project ^_^!
i find it interesting, though, that whenever my manager writes comments on my project, he writes like: "maybe you want to add a description...", "maybe you want to put this in section 2", etc. when really, it is not a 'maybe', but more like 'just do it.'

OMG CRANE?

Today, I walked over to my coworkers' desk and looked at their model. I noticed that a branch fell off of the model (it is of a synthetic tree), so I asked why it's off. They pointed to a crane outside the building and said that the crane hit the building, which caused the model to break a little. I was like, "woah, I didn't feel it?" and they said it happened while I was at lunch. I was so surprised that the crane hit the building and nothing broke, but it shook violently enough to break the model...

of course, that was all a lie. FML.

val misses her homies...

Mike was online today.
Christine was not. What a weird change of events.

On Friday we learned that one of the Senior Engineers who work here passed away. Yeah… it was sad. He was in the hospital for a routine check up on Tuesday but doctors found an infection, so he spent the night there and then on Friday we learned that one of his organ failed and with a chain of events he passed away. He was maybe like 50 at most, probably late 40s. It's kinda eerie cause theres been a lot of death-related incidents lately. However, I think this is one of the few that actually impacted me or one that I've been in touch with (I was working on a project with him last week.) My grandpa passed when I was like 5 so I barely remember that.

Something that's cool: his church has been helping the family out a lot. Yeah--the church. I only just recently found out he was involved at a church. One thing that’s weird though is that the church set up two funds for people to donate to: a church scholarship fund (cause the church is also a school apparently..) and a church building fund (finances that will go towards new chuch buildings..) I think it's kinda weird cause it feels a little exploitive? But whatever it's what the family wants I'm assuming and it lets non-christians get involved to help the church grow. It's cool that you can help impact the church even when you passed away.

One of the things that suck is…one of the direct consequences of this is that everyone's work has been bumped up quite a bit and therefore expect less blogging from me.. maybe. Haha. Though a lot of this work I've been given, I don't really know how to do. O_o" Is it fair to assume its not that important since they give it to the intern to do it? =] There's not really anyone to teach me either since everyone is also very busy…and oh my mentor/supervisor is out for vacation this week… haha what timing..

mmMm yeah I'm feeling some jamba right now.. buy one get one free anyone? =]

where my homies at?

HAPPY HAPPY JOY JOY!

today i was talking to my work buddy ann:
11:43 AM me: man i think work life makes me depressed.
i sit here & do nothing. &read depressing news
the permanent employee: me too
but you're intern, i'm permanent
me: haha that is true
sigh. maybe that is why u look so sad everyday :P haha
11:48 AM the permanent employee: i do? oh no :(

but actually
today is a good day.

our department moved into another building. when i got here, i could not find my cubicle: 5408. &then i realized, the cubicle i was suppose to be in, someone else was using it already o_O. i then had to find the guy in charge &they had put my stuff in cubicle 5092, which is like. 5 aisles down from where my department is. lol. AND the cubicle walls are real short, so in essence, you could look over the walls at your neighbors to see what they were doing: NO PRIVACY. obviously i did not like that T_T haha. my coworkers came by to see where i was, &they felt sorry for me. so i waited for the vp's secretary to come in. she comes in at 9, and i come in at 8. so i killed an hour by wandering around like a poor lost kid ^_^ anyway, when she came in, i went to ask her if i could be in 5407 which was vacant &had higher cubicle walls & was closer to my department's aisle. &she let me! YAYY!!! the cubicle walls are higher. but im right by the aisle where everyone walks by. oh wells. it's not too bad. also they set up my computer at like. 930. but i had no internet/telephone connection, so i got to kill another hour by wandering around ^_^ hehehehe. so i technically did not start working til 1030 am today. it was great fun :)

i also only took an half hour lunch. so i can leave at 4:30 today! YEEEE. &after work i get to go get really good niu rou mian (which i have been craving since yesterday) &taiwanese shaved ice ^___^ i is a happy camper.

PS. my mouse is annoying me. i've never noticed it before but it makes this springy nose whenever i click on something. it is annoying. T_T i guess i will click gently ...

OHH BABY GIVE ME ONE MORE CHAAANCE

HELLOOOOO FROM BERLIN!
today while i was on the train to berlin from munich, my ipod shuffle suddenly shuffled to jackson5 and i thought of what a long way michael jackson had come. from a cute little boy to a skin disease afflicted man who died at only 50.
anyway, that is all i wanted to say. hello and commentary on mj.
also that when i received christine's invitation to join this blog, the website came up in german and i was COMPLETELY confused.
germany is so foreign to me. none of us know german, and we can't apply our skills in the romantic languages here at all. i know. what noobs.

here, you guys can see a picture from every city that i took!
or later. i gotta get my grubbin on. skipped lunch today cuz of longass train ride. alas..

on Thursday after suffering cardiac arrest, according to multiple reports including the Los Angeles Times and the Associated Press. CNN has not confirmed his death.
3:37 PM me: well its not confirmed by cnn
3:39 PM dude its kinda sad eh
3:41 PM Christine: yeah it is

yahoo says hes dead
3:18 PM but i geuss CNNis better
Andrea: TMZ is fail it's like almost gossip
There was no official confirmation of the reported death and spokespersons for Jackson could not be reached for comment.
3:20 PM me: hahaha

4:35 PM Andrea: well omg said he was dead before he was
i'd trust ap and la
like, i didn't doubt it.
it was just lame that cnn is slow at getting confirmation.
me: they probably just wanted to be espeically sure
and not have to revoke what they say
4:36 PM cause they have a reputation as being a credible source
vs. OMGblog.. which is like. oh hes dead.

we're mini-engineers!

in response to anthony's post. hahaha must post fast, no one else is in the office right now but me. the guy who usually comes in at 7 is on vacation, and the girl who was already in here when i got here left, for some unknown reason. I think she's been here for a LONG time... maybe she went home? anyway.

anyway, I feel like a mini-engineer. They said it was okay that it took me 8 hours to do 13 beam calcs... when it was just finding loads based on tributary area. Today, I am correcting some mistakes I had, then I will learn to how to make the computer do my work for me. haha. what a glorious day. I'm glad I can take so much time to do such easy work... at least I hope I understand it. Haha.

It's weird to be working in ft/in after a semester of unitless dimensions in CE121. then again, we used ft/in in CE123 but you know... that class was ridiculous.

interns aren't engineers...

In the foreseeable future me, Val and Andrea are going to start our own architectural-structural-contracting builder's firm. It's going to be siick. We'll sub out all the mechnical to Tim and Simon and one day merge to a master do-it-all company and take over the world. Yeahhh. You think ARUP is hot, wait till you see what we got.

Holla if you want a job.
We're also currently looking for any investors and venture-capitalists...

BTW we're VERY MARKETABLE.. see andrea's pictures below.. yep.

life of a structural engineer

wow I'm pulling a christine and faking an email so I can copy and paste into the blog... christine is so good at deception, >:]]

anyway I just wanted to comment on how the working world makes me feel like an adult. I slept at 1:30 yesterday, which is WAYY too late. so this morning I was ultra tired. til I got a chai latte. and banana nut cake. that woke me up.

cept a few minutes later, I'm tired already... so I pee a lot in the office b/c I drink a LOT of water to stay awake. and I guess peeing keeps me awake, too. lawlcakes.

something else kinda funny is that I have this huge 30x42 schematic print out next to me on my desk, and it doubles as scratch paper for me to write down people's names as I take calls for the office now as well. and it has random calculations on it.

oh, and I think the UP advertising blimp is doing rounds outside my office :]] jk I lied. it's not for UP :(

it's almost friday...

YAYYY.
tomorrow, movers will be coming in to take our stuff to take our stuff to the building we're moving to. so that means we'll be kicked out of our cubicles around 3PM WHOOT. :) & next friday is a paid holiday. YEAH! I am liking this schedule. haha.

I didn't feel so well yesterday. :( sigh. so I was much slower at doing my work. I need to sleep much more. but that also means I won't get to do as much as I wanted to do when I get home. I really want to read my books &spend more time with God. T_T sigh I am so weaksauce. It is also freezing here in the cubicle. My hands are already cold. Maybe I'll bring a blankie in tomorrow. Or next week, since tomorrow we are moving.

so this morning, as I was driving to work in moderate traffic, I was listening to this one pastor speak on Paul before he was converted. he told a funny story (it was slightly different from this one) :
(thanks andrea :) )
Once there was a billionaire, who collected live alligators. He kept them in the pool in back of his mansion.

One day, the billionaire decides to throw a huge party, and during the party he announces, "My dear guests, I have a proposition to every man here. I will give all my money to the man who can swim across this pool full of alligators and emerge unharmed!"

As soon as he finished his last word, there was the sound of a large splash in the pool. The guy in the pool was swimming with all his might, and the crowd began to cheer him on. Finally, he made it to the other side of the pool unharmed.

The billionaire was impressed. He said, "That was incredible! Fantastic! I didn't think it could be done! Well, I must keep my end of the bargain."

The guy catches his breath, then says, "Listen, I don't want your money! I just want to know who pushed me in the pool!"

i thought it was funny :)
work is slightly more fun now. haha. so there are apparently 4 interns in cali. one in santa ana, 2 in cypress, &one in san fran. maybe i'll see the one in cypress sometime! yeeah. anyway, the one in santa ana emailed me; so that was cool, getting to know another intern in cali.

another good thing about work: i have a nice big stack of scratch paper for next year now ^__^ no more stealing scratch paper from the student learning center or from andrea &mike. my project is now like, 26 pages long. &i have to print it out everytime to have my manager check it. &after he checks it, i basically get scratch paper back ^_^ &also, he told me to print it from this other printer once. but i couldn't find the printer &i printed it twice (52 pgs ftw!). &he was on the phone. SO, this other lady helped me print it from another printer that she could find. so i printed my project 3 times. keke. so much scratch paper ^_^ &&since my coworkers are moving so they said they'd give me any non confidential trash papers they don't need ^_^ YEEE.

okay back to editting my project T_T

Workkk all day.. play all night.. get it poppin’.. I’m in the bay, trick.

Anyway, so at work we have a company parking lot in the back that requires keycard access in order to get through the gate. I got my keycard two days ago so now I don’t park on the street anymore but in the lot. Yesterday when I got off work, I went to my car and it was freaking hot inside [the weather was 97 degrees] so I rolled down both my windows to let it air out but I realized that I was bumping ghetto music so I quickly turned that ish down and waited till I got out of the gate before turning it up again. Haha. I realize that I may need to do this everyday. But whenever I get to work, I don’t need to worry about turning my music down cause my windows are usually still up. =]

while you guys are working...

I decided to get a haircut. TEHE!
and because I am vain vain vain, here it is:

Ice-cream soothes the sore throat.

It is freaking 97 degrees outside here in Concord. Today I had to be outside for like 45 minutes going from house to house explaining to the neighborhood that due to our construction project we have to change the waterline and thus we are going to have to cut their water from 8PM to 4AM tomorrow night. Basically I knocked on doors and talked to people who were home and for those who weren’t home I just left a flyer either in their mailbox or sticking out of their door. All this reminded me of HS all over again, when I was an enthusiastic volunteer for El Cerrito’s Rotary Interact club with a bunch of my HS friends—good times. We used to always go door to door asking for random stuff or flyering for random things. Looks like some of that HS volunteering experience did pay off cause today I felt really pro at flyering, rolling them up sticking inbetween door handles, sticking them out of the door hinges or hanging out of the mailbox so no one would miss the notification. No one should call in tomorrow asking why their water is cut off. It’s kind of a weird though cause apparently this happens pretty often for construction projects but it’s never happened to my house before, at least to my memory… so I guess that means they’ve never really changed the waterlines in my area. O_o”

i is a fatty.

i use to be able to run a mile in.. around 8 min in jr high. 9-10 min in hs? i forget. im not very fast.
i use to play bball everyday. & run up & down those killer long stairs in hs without too much trouble.
i use to be able to sprint base line to free throw line to base line to half court line to base line to free throw line of other court to base line to the opposite baseline.
but i can't anymore T_T.
i sound like a 40 year old working person reminiscing on hs years. not a college person reminiscing on college years. SIGH.

yesterday i went 'jogging.' i jogged for like. ... 5 min. &walked for the other 99% of the 2 miles. T_T & i felt like i was going to die. haha. I AM SO OUTTA SHAPE. T_T i hope ill only be half as outta shape by the end of summer :(
someone play bball / badminton with me!!!! im going to make josh play badminton with me when he gets back from taiwan. maybe i will actually get up for friday morning bball this year since i dont have class til 12

the best part about driving to work is the radio. but it is actually still quite lame, cause socal radio sucks. but today, i found a radio station that broadcasts this one pastor, chuck smith, that i like listening to! he's the one that started calvary chapel, the church where pastor albert use to be at &got his teaching/discipling from. :) oh snap i am excited. chuck smith's broadcast is 730 to 8. right when im driving! i am excited ^_^

umm okay. i cant think of anything else. post more later!

I actually read this finally!

hi everyone, sorry I haven't actually blogged. it's actually pretty hard for me to blog AT work because we have no cubicles... just 10 ppl in the office + me, and a lot of desks. huge desks, because we have really big drawings of buildings that we always spread out. but yeah, sorry, I will be a lame blogger with no real at work blogs.

but this blog is pretty funny. I am so amused. so I did go to LA this past weekend. and as most of you know, it was quite eventful. I DID indeed hang out with christine, but we didn't get to hit up life plaza and take cue pictures as I had originally wanted :/ oh well. I learned that God is amazing instead. haha.

but yeah! I plan on going back to work on wednesday... yayz! I will join your sleep patterns soon!

Post Numero Uno

I started work today... It'll be really tiring. Not much new. Just intern orientation. But the work looks really neat! Fighter jets. How cool.

Anyways, the most notable thing that happened today - I found out that my group starts the day at 6am! That's quite early. It helps when they're working with people in Texas. This way, we start the day with them.... so much for sleeping in.

I've gone from waking up at 11am to now... I'm assuming 5am. What a change a week makes.

As you can see, my posts will be much shorter. That's my contribution to this blog. Short and sweet.

And I don't have a computer account at work yet... so all these posts will be at odd hours.

MY THROAT IS BURNING..

Who gets sick during the summer.. really.. man if I get sick that will suck.. but at least I might get to stay home and not go to work.. haha jk I don’t hate work that much..

But one thing that did suck today was that I was without internet for like the first 4-5 hours of work cause of some tech problem with AT&T. I think if I didn’t have internet at all.. or if I were deprived of gchat I would be really bored and not necessarily more productive. I spent a good amount of time just staring at my work calendar and inbox, waiting for the next email from the tech department to tell me that the company’s internet have been fixed, however all that came was 4 more emails stating that it will take another hour, and then another hour.. and then don’t try to use the internet. But at 2:33pm we were finally good to go.

Good thing that the most of my morning was taken up by project meetings.

oh btw we have a new blog author. thanks to the popularity of our blog.. TWO FOLLOWERS!! Timothy K. Collier of Northrop in Socal have decided to join in on the blogging action. Welcome him well. =]

i wanna go home and OD on vitamin C right nowww.. gahh one more hour..

i <3 cherries & edamame.

siighh. cherries + edamame makes work a lot better. i like to just eat all the time. haha.
so i am almost done with half of my project! whoooot. hopefully i can start on the 2nd portion next week. OR MAYBE EVEN THIS WEEK!

i only took a 40 min lunch break. so i can leave 20 min early today. HEHE. :)

work sucks. i really need some time by myself to pray about things like urbana. AGH. x.x everyday, it's just work. dinner. (etc) and somehow before i know it, it's 10 and i have to get ready for bed. -__-;; at least i am 98% sure i am not taking the FM test in august anymore :) YAY! i need to finish my books still. aghh so much to do! and i need way more time with God. waaay more. ;_;

i got another minor tedious project. basically making sure people put in values correctly.

umm i guess that is about it. nothing else besides that. oh wait, good news, i get to wear casual clothing for this whole week ^__^ whoot!

too much ESDP for the day...

So I'm working on this cost estimate for a CO [change order] for those we don't know construction. Basically the contractor said in the contract he was going to do this, but then something occurred and he has to change it, so hence he issues a change order and I'm cost estimating the change order to see if its a fair charge.

Anywayy, I needed one of the senior engineers to look over my work before I turn it in to the DOC (Director of Construction) for his approval. So there are 3 contractors involved in this CO, a GC and 2 subs. So one of the subs is named Con J Franke [pronounced "Franky"]. I go into the SEs office and asks "Hey Paul, I need to know which of these equipment belongs to Frankie J" He goes "Frankie J? It's Con J Franke." ... In my head I was thinking "too much ESDP" haha. GG.

If you guys don't know who Frankie J is.. then you don't belong on this blog. Haha. jk jk, he's a rapper. He collaborated with Baby Bash on that one song, "Suga how you get so fly." You can look him up on wiki.

Anyway yepp that was my embarrassment for the day. I don't think the SE knows who Frankie J is though, good thing. =]

THANK GOD!

if i werent allowed to go on gchat, blogs, news, email, or just the internet in general, i'd go clinically insane. seriously.

SO THANK GOD I CAN! :)

next friday, we move to another building because the lease on this current building is ending soon. so i move cubicles! at first, i thought they were going to put me right by the secretary &right in the view of the managers/supervisor O_O. i would've cried T_T because that'd mean no gchat, no blog, NOTHING! but thank goodness, they placed me far away from my department o_O but at least i'm not in front of the supervisor & managers. ^__^ i prayed so hard when i asked the secretary where i was sitting. haha. thank goodness i am still...rather isolated. :)
alsssoo, since we are moving next friday, there is a chance we'll be allowed to wear jeans all next week ^__^ work clothes are so stiff. i like jeans &casual clothing much better :)

YAHH i love fridays. & lunch times. :) my favorites. hehe. this weekend, andrea is coming down to socal. i shall see her for a couple of hours tomorrow. we are going to take cue pictures. &that's about it. haha. we shall see i suppose. i want to finish reading my book this weekend. &also decide if i'm taking the actuarial #2 exam or not. i am heavily leaning towards the no side. oh snap! i also need to start on personal statements soon x.x maybe i'll do it during work. haha. & i need to decide if i'm going to urbana or not x.x

on monday, i shall go running!! i am excited. but also scared. i have not run in so long T_T i think, for my spring break flight down to socal, i was late, and i had to run to the terminal. and i was tired, after running for about 2 minutes x.x i am sad :( i am no longer in shape. BUT HOPEFULLY THIS SUMMER I SHALL BE BACK IN SHAPE!

we miss our ESDP

Originally we were going to name this blog.. fmywork but we wanted to talk about good things too so that didn’t make sense. Then we shifted to fmyESDP cause work means no ESDP but christine is lame and rejected it…anyway now its just werkadventures..

It’s FRIDAY! Wh00t. When it comes to working.. Friday is like the best day, cause half the time it’s PAYDAY. But I don’t get paid this week cause it was my first week =[ so I have to wait 2 weeks for my first paycheck. SAD.

Anyway some things I like about the working life so far:
-Solidarity with Andrea, Christine and some other working individuals this summer who also have to wake up at 7am and sleep at 11pm. [edit: and get off work at 5pm!]
-Gchat at work. WHOOOT. Talking to Christine, Andrea and Jonny all day at work keeps me sane. I also randomly talk to people who I normally don’t really talk to. That’s cool too.
-The opportunity to take to Val and Mike even though their half way across the world. Work schedule + Gchat = global conversations with Mike and Val.
-No homewerk after hours. Word.
-Making $$ vs. spending. It feels good to know that even minute your in the office you are making some doughhh.
-Looking good for work. Kinda. I think I like looking good and professional. But it makes me realize my lack of good/professional clothing. Dressing up for it is a different matter.

-Both my drives to and from work are against traffic. Sooo its a fairly nice 20-25 minute commute. =]
-I get my own cubicle, computer, work cell phone and the ability to take company vehicles whenever I want. That’s pretttty cool.

One thing though about work… is that it makes me feel like a little kid. Haha. I’m like the youngest in the office and not to mention the only Asian. Everyone else is like mid 30s and white. VERY TYPICAL in project engineering. Anyway, Christine likes to call the people she works with coworkers but it’s weird for me to consider the other engineers here as my coworkers cause it doesn’t feel peer to peer. The other interns here though are pretty cool, but I rarely interact with them cause their stationed throughout the company in different departments. Other people who are working probably yadadaimean. It’ll be an interesting contrast to feeling really old at school next year…

because anthony is whiny

haha. fine. another post. gosh.

work..is..lame. my project is boring T_T it's tedious. but at least it's not hard i guess.
i really dont want to think about the time when i will really have to enter the work force, and do this routine everyday for the rest of my life o_O. that sounds kind of unexciting. i like the student life much better.

not that actuarial work is boring. i like it. but just the thought of WORK: seeing the same few coworkers day in &day out. working 8 hours + 1 hour lunch. getting home &being too tired to do much other than lounge around. possibly having to cook for a family in the future AFTER i get home from work. etc etc. it's just not as fun being a student. SIIGh. i do not want to grow up :(

Listening to my coworkers talk about God is interesting. God, for them, seems to be this non-personal God who requires a 'hello' or some meditation once in awhile. seems to be this God who just needs some acknowledgment from time to time. &even though they believe in a God, they live as if they do not. God plays no role, or, at best, a minor role, in their lives.

here is a story that i emailed to anthony:
the other day my coworker was telling my other coworkers about how scared she was of being held hostage on some plane trip cause she was sitting by some creepy dude. and she said she got so worried & scared that she prayed & promised God she'd give him 11 dollars if she turned out okay. i thought it was really funny because... why would God need 11 dollars? ... and 11 dollars is so little... and... why do we need to bribe God? haha. but yeah.... js reminded me of how i am very glad that our God is so much bigger than ... 11 dollars. haha. ii dont think any of my department coworkers are christian. it's kinda interesting to see their lifestyle or thinking styles. etc. quite diff from last year when everyone in my department was christian, granted my department was tiny, but still!

okay i is done.

. . . do you love Me? . . . Tend My sheep —John 21:16

Jesus did not say to make converts to your way of thinking, but He said to look after His sheep, to see that they get nourished in the knowledge of Him. We consider what we do in the way of Christian work as service, yet Jesus Christ calls service to be what we are to Him, not what we do for Him. Discipleship is based solely on devotion to Jesus Christ, not on following after a particular belief or doctrine. "If anyone comes to Me and does not hate . . . , he cannot be My disciple" ( Luke 14:26 ). In this verse, there is no argument and no pressure from Jesus to follow Him; He is simply saying, in effect, "If you want to be My disciple, you must be devoted solely to Me." A person touched by the Spirit of God suddenly says, "Now I see who Jesus is!"— that is the source of devotion.

Today we have substituted doctrinal belief for personal belief, and that is why so many people are devoted to causes and so few are devoted to Jesus Christ. People do not really want to be devoted to Jesus, but only to the cause He started. Jesus Christ is deeply offensive to the educated minds of today, to those who only want Him to be their Friend, and who are unwilling to accept Him in any other way. Our Lord’s primary obedience was to the will of His Father, not to the needs of people— the saving of people was the natural outcome of His obedience to the Father. If I am devoted solely to the cause of humanity, I will soon be exhausted and come to the point where my love will waver and stumble. But if I love Jesus Christ personally and passionately, I can serve humanity, even though people may treat me like a "doormat." The secret of a disciple’s life is devotion to Jesus Christ, and the characteristic of that life is its seeming insignificance and its meekness. Yet it is like a grain of wheat that "falls into the ground and dies"— it will spring up and change the entire landscape ( John 12:24 ).
